The Sports Ministry has finally ended all speculation surrounding India’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup. On Thursday, the ministry confirmed that Team India will play Pakistan in the high-voltage Group A clash on September 14, 2025, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

India vs Pakistan Clash Confirmed

The much-anticipated fixture between Suryakumar Yadav’s India and Babar Azam’s Pakistan will go ahead as scheduled, with India’s campaign beginning on September 9 in the UAE. The ministry made it clear that while bilateral sporting events between the two nations remain banned, participation in multilateral tournaments like the Asia Cup will not be restricted.

“India’s approach to sports involving Pakistan reflects our overall policy. Bilateral events will not take place, but multilateral tournaments are exempt,” a ministry source told PTI.

Bilateral Ban Still in Place

The policy, unveiled on Thursday, emphasizes that:

  • Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral contests.
  • Pakistani teams will not be invited to play bilateral matches in India.
  • Multilateral competitions, however, remain unaffected in accordance with the Olympic Charter.
  • This means while fans will get to witness the traditional India vs Pakistan rivalry in Asia Cup 2025, bilateral cricket between the two nations remains indefinitely suspended.

India Could Face Pakistan Thrice

Depending on results, India and Pakistan may meet up to three times in the Asia Cup — once in the group stage (September 14), possibly in the Super Four round, and again in the final if both sides qualify.

Neutral Venues for Future Tournaments

The ministry also reiterated that India will not play matches on Pakistani soil even in multi-nation tournaments. The Champions Trophy 2025, originally slated to be hosted by Pakistan, has already been shifted to Dubai for India’s matches after an ICC-BCCI-PCB agreement. This neutral-venue arrangement will continue until at least 2027.

Political Tensions Over Sport

The debate around India’s participation reignited after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, raising doubts about whether the Asia Cup fixture would go ahead. Speculation about India’s withdrawal was finally quashed with this official announcement, bringing relief to fans and broadcasters alike.
